Ventspils University College has several important research
projects, but special attention is paid to the applied projects, which are of
both regional and state level importance. According to the specific fields of
activities of Ventspils University College,
the research directions of
the Faculty of Economics and Management are as follows:
- potential opportunities of the development of Ventspils and its region on the East - West business axis;
- creation of a favourable business environment;
- The Baltic Sea as an internal sea of Europe and, in the future, an internal sea of the European Union and its economic framework.
Both teaching staff and students in the Faculty of Economics and Management are
involved in the implementation of the
project "E-Ventspils" (e-city development).
Special research work is being done in connection with
regional development
and tourism. Ventspils University College is also involved in the implementation
of a wide scale project for modernisation of an accounting
programme called
"Navision" which includes development of corresponding teaching aids and
implementation of accounting software in practice.
In order to improve competitiveness of small and medium business of Ventspils
region in European economic framework, Ventspils University College, together
with its co-operation partners from Finland (Turku School of Economics and Business
Administration and Turku Area Development Centre) and Estonia (Management Centre
N.O.R.T.), as well as the Association of Entrepreneurs of Ventspils region "Bruìis"
are engaged in
the international co-operation project CoCoNet (Co-operation
Competitiveness Network).
In the Faculty of Translation Studies the research directions are as follows:
- Terminology studies and creation of new dictionaries (in co-operation
with other specialists of the European Union, Centre of Translation and
Terminology in Riga, Faculty of Foreign Languages of the University of Latvia
and the Academy of Sciences, Latvian Language Institute);
- Pragmatic, social linguistic and psycholinguistic studies of translation
and interpreting.
